News : Conference attended by over 180 Dentists and Nurses


The 2009 annual Implant Centre conference, supported by Ankylos at the Aurora Hotel Crawley, was set over two days.

Day 1 was for dentists who have limited or no experience in restoring dental implants. Bill Schaeffer and Guy Barwell presented on dental implant treatment planning, the new Ankylos products, impression techniques, restoring single crowns, complications, and maintenance procedures.

Day 2 was for dentists who already have a good understanding of implant restorations (i.e. dentists who have experience of restoring single crowns and wish to move on to more complex treatment). Guy, Bill and Tony Rose discussed more complex treatment planning, introducing the practical aspects of bridges and full arch restorations, as well as illustrating the more advanced implant possibilities for patients.

Key Points from the conference

  • simple dental implant restorations are very easy for trained dentists to do
  • always plan for 3 appointments with any bridge or free end saddle cases
  • we are moving towards screw retained restorations wherever possible
  • leaving any cement alongside a crown margin can cause rapid infections in the gum
  • when screw retaining, it is vital to check the contact points are not over tight
  • if patients experience food trapping from open contact points, you have to replace the crown
  • let us talk to your patients about bone grafting if it is required - it can really worry people when it does not need to be an issue, if explained sensitively.

The Implant Centre dental nurses Dolly, Gemma and Kara gave presentations for nurses on setting up for a restorative procedure. The overall feed back was excellent, with many dentists surprised by the myriad of dental implant treatment options now available for their patients.
